For the last example, the sentence does not even make sense because the writer could not have written the statement while singing in the choir simultaneously.

Tighten Your Descriptions

Adjectives are a strong component in any piece of writing. They are good at making the reader have a mental picture of what the author is talking about. Good descriptions make the reader a part of the action since they touch his or her senses. To make your content watertight, you should use “tight” descriptions and discard all weak ones.

Let’s face it. Teaching a foreign language can be quite challenging, especially if your class has had little to no experience with learning a different language. Don’t let the current challenge discourage your efforts!!! In the last eleven months of teaching English, I’ve learned many ways to hold the children’s interests, and I hope that my tips for teaching in Asia will help you as you begin your exciting new path as a teacher.

1. In the beginning, visual cues are key!

If your students are completely unaware of what you are saying, try printing off pictures of what you need to explain. Printing off flash cards of a person sitting down nicely in a chair or a picture of an ear to promote listening will help the initial language barrier be easily bridged.

2. Be relate-able!

Children will appreciate a teacher who is relatable. Make an effort to learn all of your student’s names and try to have a personal relationship with each student. Respect is something that is earned. If you respect your students, they, in turn, will respect you. Earn their respect. Students listen to those they respect. Try to avoid using impersonal titles such as “you” to get their attention. Children respond more promptly when hearing their names. Most early childhood education degrees teach that children appreciate a teacher who is relatable.

No one likes doing the same thing over and over again. Don’t be afraid to mix things up! Teaching creative lesson plans will captivate your student’s attention and engage them as active participants. Do you have that one student in your class that just will not pay attention? Chances are, that he or she has some personal issues that radiate to outside of the classroom. Whenever I have a student that is having a hard time in personal matters, I always try to show him or her some special attention. Showing the child that you care will earn his or her respect and he or she will listen. Try giving the child a hug or a simple pat on the back to make him or her feel appreciated.

Whenever my class gets a little too loud, I have a stimulus which always quiets them down. I chose a bird shaped whistle named Kiki Bird. I know it may seem silly, but the kids love it and respond to the whistle positively. I simply blow the whistle, and call the names of the students who are being overly talkative. They apologize to Kiki Bird and I write their names on the board. After 3 chances, further actions are taken.

Give your students a chance to be aware of their wrong doings before taking further action. Having a stimulus will create a fun way to keep your student’s conversations at bay. Have catchy slogans which will trigger immediate responses from your students. I find that saying “be be be” triggers “quiet” from my students. Having your own catchy slogan will be a good, immediate way to captivate your student’s attention.

8. Get to know each of your students.

Having a strong relationship with each of your students will pay big dividends. Different students have different styles of learning. What works for one student may not be the best learning method for another. Adapt your teaching plans to involve more time for those who are in need.

Try to eliminate down time. I find that one or two students will finish their work before others. Try to find creative ways to occupy their time while the others finish their work. I would recommend a drawing book or a small selection of books in your classroom. This way, the students who are finished earlier are occupied and the others are being productive as well.

9. Rely on the strengths of your strong students.

I find, that there are one or two strong students in every classroom. Don’t be afraid to ask the strong students to help others. They love to help and feel privileged to help you. This is another way to occupy their time and keep conversations down to a minimum. Asking the strong students to pass out the books or hand out the name tags at the end of the day are simple chores that will make their day!

10. Use positive reinforcement in class!

This is one of the tips for teaching in Asia that took me a long time to learn. Minimize the negative and accentuate the positive. On days when my classes are particularly talkative, I award the students who are paying attention.

I use stickers and smiley faces, but you may choose whatever method works best for your particular class. Instead of focusing on the students who are doing wrong things, focus on the students who are following the rules and shower them with encouragement. This will catch the attention of those who are not following the rules and they, too, will want encouragement.

If the students are not looking at you, chances are, they are not listening. I often use “Wow, everyone’s eyes are so pretty! Thanks so much for listening to me today!” This will allow other students to engage eye contact with you.

12. The best tip for teaching in Asia: Set clear guidelines in your classroom!

You need to be aware that this is your class. Be distinct in your methods and let the children know what actions are taken after “x” amount of warnings. I find that 3 warnings are more than enough. Usually, after one or two times of warning a student, he or she is abundantly aware of the wrong doing in question. Be clear and consistent.

Make it to where there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that extra action needs to be taken. By being clear and concise, the students will be more alert, and more importantly, more aware of their actions. Some examples of further actions are sending him or her to an administrative assistant, or assigning sentences to be written.

Three Kingdoms

Three Kingdoms ESL Classroom Game

20-25 minutes Groups of 3-5 Make questions with Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How

Preparation for the Three Kingdoms Game:

For this game you will need to prepare 3 sets of cards:

1) Cards with question words including a card that has the word “China” on it.  You should have 5 to 10 copies of each question word but only have one China card.

2) Army cards (with just the text “10 Attack Points” written on them). You need 30 to 40 of these.

3) Castle cards ( with just the text “50 Defense Points” written on them. You only need 10 to 15 of these.

Kingdom names can be written on the board and points tallied and calculated on the board as well.

You will mix up the question word cards and have them on the table for the students to come up and choose. You will keep the Army and Castle cards with you to give to the teams as they progress.

Game Play for the Three Kingdoms ESL Classroom Game:

  1. Place a number of cards with the words “Who,” “What,” “Where,” “When,” “Why,” and “How” face down
  2. Among the cards is a “China” card
  3. Divide the class into three groups and designate them as one of the ancient Korean kingdoms: Shilla, Baekje, and Goguryeo
  4. All “kingdoms” start with 100 points
  5. Groups take turns flipping over and one card at a time and make a question with the word.
  6. For every correct question they make, they get an “Army” cards, which has 10 attack points.
  7. For every third correct question, they get a “Castle” card which has 50 defense points. (adds to the 100 they started with)
  8. After making a correct question, groups can choose to take an Army card OR they can choose to use up their army cards to attack another group and destroy their points”
  9. When a team wants to attack you ask them: Who do you want to attack? Then they must respond with the name of another kingdom or if you want to make them use a full sentence (Ex. We want to attack the Shilla Kingdom)
  10. When they attack they give you as many Army Cards (worth 10 attack points each) as they have (or as many as they want) and the defending team will lose the same number of points. (Ex. Shilla has 100 points + 1 castle card so 150 defense points and Baekje attacks with 4 army cards now Shilla has only 110 points)
  11. Continue playing until one team has destroyed all other teams points and they are declared the winner.
  12. However, whoever turns over a “China” card will cause ALL groups to lose one Castle (-50 points) and ALL their Army cards! (essentially re-setting the game)

Variations to this ESL Game:

  • Make smaller groups and include other “kingdoms” such as Gaya and Mahan
  • If you are teaching in other countries change names
    • For example, if you are teaching in China, you can change the “Kingdom” names to states or dynasties in Chinese history and have the “Huns” or “Mongols” as the killer card
  • Include other question words, not just the standard who, what, where, when, why, and how
  • Put grammar or trivia questions on cards
  • Assign each group a “capital city” as a starter castle and city names or specific castle names to “castle cards,” this way you can also “Who do you want to attack?” and “Where do you want to attack?” or “What do you want to attack?”

Western vs Korean Views (A Personal Experience)

I was born and raised in the United States but from a Korean mother.  She didn’t teach me the language but I did learned a bit of the culture. I consider myself completely American but found myself in a unique position after living in Korea for several years. I feel like I can understand (finally) both sides of my family.

Korea kind of comes in phases.  There is the first phase that is when you first get here and everything is great.  You are welcomed by very kind customer service trained people.  They tell you exactly what to do and help you get to where you need.

Phases of Korea

This phase also goes all the way to moving into your apartment, finding the local grocery store, learning how to navigate the city, and getting settled in your job.  For most people I feel like this phase lasts up to about 2 months. Kind of the honey moon phase.

The next phase is the realization phase.  This is where you start to see that customer service is much more of a trained surface level gimmick that doesn’t seem to run deep.  You realize that people don’t actually think you are all that funny, that half of the time people don’t really understand what you are saying, and that you can constantly surprise people by doing simple tasks such as taking the bus or eating with chopsticks.

This is the important phase.  I feel like this is where people either give up and say, “Ok, these Korean people are dumb and I don’t like it here” or they say “alright things are a little different then what I thought but I want to dig in and see if there is more to it.”

You hear things like “keep an open mind” but that really doesn’t mean anything until your core values are tested.

Digging Deeper into Korea

I’m glad to say that I chose to dig in a little deeper. And here are a few things I found:

  1. Korean people will judge you upon appearance. I am actually getting use to this.  I realize that it is honest and genuine.  I haven’t found very many people with bad intentions but they will say something like “oh your atmosphere isn’t good today” or “it seems your condition is bad” meaning that they can physically see that something is going on with you today that might be different from normal. And unconsciously they point it out. For some people that is it.  They just see and say.  For others they are genuinely worried about you.
  2. Tradition is respect is communication. For a lot of people the traditions they grew up with (using two hands, speaking differently to older people) are ridiculous. They realize this but can’t change the fact that it is how they communicate their feelings. If they don’t want to upset you and are trying to impress you then they won’t give you a direct answer.  So if you ask a direct question like “Can I get an extra vacation day?” they might answer “uhm, maybe”, but what they are actually saying is “No… but I like you as a person and I want you to know that”
  3. Expressing intention is often as good as doing.  We grew up with ‘actions speak louder than words’ but here often I feel its “do what you want as long as you can talk a good one” I know that this exists in the US but we don’t explicitly say it. We naturally want to believe people who can use their words to convince us but we train ourselves to ignore it and look at the facts. Korean people just never got that training.  And they don’t seem to want it.
  4. Loneliness is the devil. I love my space and my personal time.  But I feel that people here in general love to be around others. If you are thought of as a loner its a very bad thing.  People don’t respect individuality but they believe there is a right way to do things and if you are a good person then you will do them the right way.
  5. Age and respect work both ways.  As a university student in Korea I was a bit older than most of the other kids.  I never thought of age as having any sort of affect on friendship except for some obvious things like ‘oh I remember that tv show but you are too young to remember it, etc’.  But here I was always treated with so much respect simply because I was older, that I actually became a more respectable person.  I ended up living up to their expectations.

I’m glad I didn’t brush off Korea right at the beginning. I can’t lie I have had some troubling times here.  But I have similar problems with people in the US. Its just easier to blame people I don’t like here because they are Korean and I am not. But all in all it’s not that different.

These images were taken while traveling in Asia. We got on a little role where we would take pictures all the time. We were teachers in Korea for several years and enjoyed every bit of it.  Teaching in Korea is very fun and exciting.
